Curriculum intent:
At Reigate Valley College, our aim is to support students in initially engaging with the subject and developing a positive relationship with English. We recognise that, for some students, previous experiences within mainstream education may have created barriers to their engagement and confidence.
We deliver a diverse, engaging and flexible English curriculum that is tailored to the individual needs of our students. Through this approach, we aim to develop positive attitudes towards the different aspects of the subject, while helping students to recognise and build upon their individual strengths and areas of success.
KS4 Implementation
We maintain a flexible curriculum offer, using adaptive teaching and learning approaches to respond effectively to the individual learning needs of our students. Regular CAT tests and reading age assessments are used to identify gaps in knowledge and understanding, allowing us to target areas that require further development.
We have a consistent assessment and feedback cycle, which enables staff to monitor progress and adapt teaching accordingly. Students also regularly practise and apply Tier 2 and subject-specific vocabulary, supporting the development of their literacy skills and their ability to access and engage with the wider curriculum.
Impact
Students leave RVC with a positive mindset and attitude towards English. They have developed greater resilience and confidence, alongside the ability to take calculated risks in their learning and apply their skills in new and unfamiliar situations.
Students leave with a broader knowledge base and a stronger understanding of how English skills can support them across different areas of their education and future lives. Each student works towards a qualification that is appropriate to their individual needs and personalised learning plan, which may include AQA Entry Level, Functional Skills or GCSE qualifications.
